'Batman v Superman' star Michael Shannon says he fell asleep during the movie

batman vs superman trailer image 31

Michael Shannon is a national treasure. I don’t know if he’ll get an Oscar nomination for his supporting turn in Nocturnal Animals (I have trouble believing that Academy members will make it past the opening credits), but he deserves it. He’s also been fairly ubiquitous in 2016 with roles in Complete Unknown, Frank & Lola, Midnight Special, Wolves, Poor Boy, Elvis & Nixon, Loving, and Salt and Fire. He also had a minor cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as Zod’s corpse.

When it comes to the DC movies, Shannon tells Fandango that he didn’t sign on because he was looking for a franchise (and as you can see from his assembly of 2016 films, he prefers more independent fare). He did Man of Steel because it was topical:

man of steel“When I did Man of Steel I thought the story was interesting; I thought it was relevant. It was about a civilization that destroys the planet they live on and goes looking for another one. Ring any bells? That’s why I did it. I didn’t do it because I felt I needed a big comic book franchise – I honestly thought it was a beautiful story.”

However, he didn’t feel quite as fondly about Batman v Superman

Shannon: You’re gonna get me in trouble, man! People ask me about this all the time. Okay, I’ll tell you the god’s honest truth. Zack [Snyder] is gonna kill me for this – he’s gonna kill me. I watched it once and I fell asleep.

Fandango: You fell asleep?!

Shannon: I know, I know… I was on an international flight and I was tired.

Fandango: So we’ll blame the international flight for that. Also, c’mon – you can’t watch a movie like Batman v Superman on an airplane on that tiny screen.

Shannon: No, you’re right. I shouldn’t have been watching it on a plane. But I never go to the movies anymore! I don’t have time to see anything. I used to go to the movies all the time when I was 20 years old and wasn’t working 10 days a week.

I hope Shannon was at least awake for the part where Batman and Superman bond because their mothers happen to share the same first name.

Why Katie Holmes says she walked away from the Batman movies and has no regrets

Batman Begins Warner Bros final

In 2005, Katie Holmes was cast as the romantic lead opposite Christian Bale in Warner Bros.’ reboot of the Batman franchise, “Batman Begins.”

It was Holmes' biggest role since the end of the hit TV show that made her a star, “Dawson’s Creek.”

But after the global success of “Batman Begins” (it made over $370 million worldwide), Holmes did not return for the 2008 sequel, “The Dark Knight.” Her character, Rachel Dawes, was taken over by Maggie Gyllenhaal.

That led to speculation that director Christopher Nolan recast the role. Audiences and critics alike generally felt Holmes' performance was forgettable.

But Nolan revealed in the lead-up to “The Dark Knight” that he had wanted Holmes to return.

“Katie wasn’t available for the role, which I wasn’t very happy about, but these things happen, and I was very, very fortunate that Maggie [Gyllenhaal] was able to take it over,” he said

Gyllenhaal even personally reached out to Holmes to get her approval to take on the role.

Holmes told Business Insider in a recent interview promoting her new feature directing debut, "All We Had," that she didn't have regrets about walking away from the Batman franchise.

“You know, I really enjoyed working on the first one and I wish I could have worked with Chris Nolan again,” Holmes said. “It was a decision that I made at that time and it was right for me at that moment, so I don't have any regrets. I think that Maggie did a wonderful job. But I really hope that I get to work with Chris some day.”

Holmes didn't get anymore specific about why exactly she left the franchise at that time.

Along with starring in “All We Had,” Holmes will next be seen in the miniseries “The Kennedys: After Camelot,” playing Jacqueline Kennedy, and Steven Soderbergher’s “Logan Lucky.” Both come out next year.

Why Michael Keaton says he turned down 'Batman Forever': The script 'sucked'

$

Batamn keaton

For many, Michael Keaton's version of Batman was the best ever to grace the big screen, even surpassing director Christopher Nolan's more recent films. So when the actor left the character before Joel Schumacher's 1995 "Batman Forever" (in which Val Kilmer took over the cape and mask), many fans were bummed.

And they were even more disappointed with what Schumacher did with the franchise, changing Tim Burton's dark and mysterious vibe from the first two movies into a wacky, Day-Glo fiasco.

Keaton certainly has no regrets about walking away. Recently on the Hollywood Reporter's podcast "Awards Chatter," he delved into some of his issues with Schumacher's movie, mainly that the script "sucked."

Batman Forever

"I didn’t understand why [Schumacher] wanted to do what he wanted to do," he said. "I knew it was in trouble when he said, 'Why does everything have to be so dark?'"

Keaton said he went through "many meetings" before finally departing the film franchise.

The actor will return to the comic-book world when he plays villain the Vulture in the upcoming "Spider-Man: Homecoming," which opens in theaters July 7.

15 actors who would be perfect to play Batman on 'Arrow'

$

arrow

The INSIDER Summary:

• From Michael Keaton to Christian Bale, the role of Batman has a legacy.
• "Arrow" has included Batman references and characters in their storylines.

The moment Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) finally appeared on Supergirl this season, all bets were off as to which DC characters could make their way onto the CW’s Arrowverse. Number one on that list has to be Bruce Wayne/Batman. Fans have been clamoring for and asking if good ‘ol Bats will be making an appearance in any of the DC shows? Considering many Batman characters (e.g. Ra’s al Ghul) and elements have found their way onto Arrow, and Supergirl has dropped various Batman/Gotham hints, having Bruce and his alter-ego make an appearance seems plausible.

While Fox has the kid version of Bruce in Gotham and the DCEU has Ben Affleck donning the cowl, The CW could turn to producer Greg Berlanti to find a way to create its version of the iconic character. Whether we find Bruce on Earth-38 (Supergirl) or Earth-1 (Arrow, The Flash), his inclusion into the Arrowverse would be exciting. Bruce would probably be used in similar manner to Hoechlin’s Superman, in a supporting, guest star role. Batman won’t be getting his own show on The CW.

If Bruce Wayne/Batman makes an appearance in future crossover events, just who will step into his shoes? Our Batman would be mature and older than Oliver Queen, and a caliber of actor who would actually take a CW role. With that as our starting point, here are 15 Actors Who Could Play Bruce Wayne/Batman in the Arrowverse.

15. Brant Daugherty

You may not know the name, but Brant Daugherty does have that Bruce Wayne look: he could pass for a billionaire playboy, while moonlighting as a masked vigilante with a brooding stare.

Best known for his role of Noel Kahn on Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars, Brant’s filmography consists of Days of Our Lives and some TV movies, so he’d be tackling the role with a clean slate. That fresh face factor is something The CW loves and has proven to be successful with, having gone with Stephen Amell and Grant Gustin as leads for their respective shows. Prior to becoming superheroes, both were guest-star guys with bit roles here and there on various TV series.

At 31, Brant is on the younger spectrum of the age-range for our Batman, but we’re confident he has the range and presence to more than hold his own with Amell, Gustin and the rest of the Arrowverse heroes. He also appeared on Dancing with the Stars, which is a bonus for him since The CW likes their heroes with singing and dancing backgrounds like Gustin, Melissa Benoist, and Caity Lotz.

14. Tom Welling

You have to love the twist of a former Superman playing Batman. The choice is almost too good to pass up. If a feature film Superman like Brandon Routh can become The Atom, why can’t Tom Welling become The Bat?

We all know that Welling gained a large fan following and praise for his portrayal of Clark Kent on the long running series, Smallville. Not only is the show one of The CW’s greatest successes but it paved the way for the current Arrowverse. Since the series wrapped up in 2011, Tom has kept a relatively low profile with small roles in movies like Draft Day. Now at 39 years-of-age, Welling’s appearance has changed from how we remember him as young Clark. Gone is the clean cut look, replaced with a scruffy beard and a short haircut that has a good amount of silver mixed in. This mature look, along with his former “Super” role, would instantly give Tom a seasoned veteran position amongst the new group of heroes we currently have. That experience is what no other actor on this list brings to the role of Bruce Wayne.

13. Wes Bentley

“I did always want to play Batman. I liked Batman because he had no super powers.” That’s what Wes Bentley told Larry King back in a 2015 interview. Not only does the actor want to play Batman but back before Ben Affleck landed the part in the DCEU, Christopher Nolan apparently suggested Wes for the role, having worked with him in Interstellar. With his breakout role in American Beauty in 1999, Bentley’s promising acting career languished after a publicized, dark personal battle with drugs. Now on the path of recovery, that experience could help him bring the dark edginess needed for the role of the Dark Knight.

While his career has been mostly in features, with films like The Hunger Games and Pete’s Dragon, Wes has recently appeared on TV in American Horror Story. The chance of finally getting to play Bruce Wayne/Batman in a guest role capacity, should be enough to entice Wes to make his way onto the Arrowverse. With a piercing eyes, classic leading man features and at 38-years-old, Wes looks the part for our Batman. Bringing with him an air of danger, he’s certainly capable of delivering unhinged energy to play the dual personas.

People noticed that Trump basically quoted Bane in his inauguration speech

donald trump bane

A line from President Donald Trump's inauguration speech on Friday eerily echoed the Batman villain Bane.

After Trump's speech, people quickly noticed one line's similarity to a Bane quote from the Christopher Nolan-directed Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises," which came out in 2012.

"Today, we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another, or from one party to another — but we are transferring power from Washington, DC, and giving it back to you, the people," Trump said in his speech.

Not exactly the same, but it's close to what Bane, played by Tom Hardy, says of Gotham when he holds the city hostage and removes its police and powerful officials.

"We take Gotham from the corrupt! The rich! The oppressors of generations who have kept you down with myths of opportunity, and we give it back to you, the people," Bane said.

Certainly, Trump did not intend to quote Bane, but "give it back to you, the people" is a line that will have some staying power after Inauguration Day.

Watch a video comparing Bane's line to Trump's:

Ben Affleck will not direct the next 'Batman' movie: 'I cannot do both jobs'

Ben Affleck has announced that he will not be directing the upcoming standalone Batman movie, "The Batman," according to Variety.

This ends months of speculation that the current Dark Knight would not just be writing the script but helming the next major Warner Bros. release centered on the beloved DC Comics character.

“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions,” Affleck said in a statement to Variety. “Performing this role demands focus, passion, and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”

According to sources in the Variety story, Warner Bros. is in full support of Affleck's decision and it was not based on the recent box-office failure of his latest directing/starring effort, "Live by Night" (also released by Warner Bros.).

The search is now on for a new director, with reports having "War of the Planet of the Apes" director Matt Reeves at the top of the list.

The Hollywood Reporter story on the Affleck news states that Affleck and Warner Bros. executives have been unhappy with the script for weeks. There is currently no release date yet for "The Batman."

Affleck played Batman in last year's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" and "Suicide Squad."

He will next put on the cape and mask for "Justice League," which opens in November.

'The LEGO Batman Movie' is the best Batman film since 'The Dark Knight'

$

lego batman

The INSIDER Summary

• "The LEGO Batman Movie" is a great movie for both kids and adults.
• The movie is fun, an area in which the live-action DC movies are lacking.
• "The LEGO Batman Movie" understands the way audiences interact with DC characters.
• There are a bunch of surprise cameos that aren't teased in the trailers.

They've finally done it. Warner Bros. has finally made a great DC movie again.

After 2016's underwhelming duo of "Batman v Superman" and "Suicide Squad,""The LEGO Batman Movie" is the Batman film fans have been desperately longing to see.

From the moment the film begins and Will Arnett's pint-sized Caped Crusader says that DC Comics is the house that Batman built, you know you're going to see something special.

What follows is a non-stop barrage of action, Batsongs, and jokes at previous Batfilms. The followup to the self-aware 2014 hit, "The LEGO Movie," the film's spin-off doesn't shy away from delivering punches to any other DC movie. Some are obvious — like Batman pondering why you would ever consider having villains take down other villains, a nod to last summer's "Suicide Squad"— and others are more subtle jabs that adult viewers of Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" trilogy will appreciate.

lego batman smile

No one goes unscathed. There's a blatant Marvel diss and an even more subtle Trump jab from Batman.

Director Chris McKay, who has worked on Adult Swim's animated parody series "Robot Chicken," gracefully takes the reins from comedy duo Chris Miller and Phil Lord ("The LEGO Movie") in delivering a humorous and heartfelt story.

Moreso, it's also just fun — an area in which the previous few DC live-action films have been lacking. The live-action films have been so adamant about being grounded in reality that it has taken something out of the characters that made audiences fall in love with them in the first place. It's clear that McKay and the rest of "The LEGO Batman Movie" team understand DC's characters in a way that accurately depicts them to the fandom.

lego batman v superman

While the film delivers a lot of laughs for kids and adults alike, it's complemented by a larger story that gets to the heart of the Caped Crusader himself. Seemingly content with being alone — and being an awesome vigilante crime fighter — Batman slowly comes to realize that he can't be the best hero Gotham needs by working solo and only thinking of himself, especially when a horde of villains is unleashed upon his home.

He's joined by the likes of Dick Grayson/Robin (Michael Cera), who balances out Batman's ego with a delightful overeagerness to please his new father. The many iterations of "dad" he uses to refer to Batman throughout the film are both endearing and chuckle-inducing.

robin batman

Barbara Gordon/Batgirl (Rosario Dawson) is a tough-as-nails crime-fighting machine, and the new Gotham City commissioner, who likes to boast that she trained at "Harvard for Police," knocks some sense into Bats that it's okay to sometimes let your guard down and be vulnerable.

lego batman movie barbara

And finally, someone gets that the way to focus on the Joker on-screen is by highlighting his unique, passive-aggressive relationship with the Caped Cruader. Zach Galifianakis takes over as the latest iteration of the Clown Prince of Crime who just wants Batman to admit that he is his greatest enemy ever. (Sorry, Joker. That title seems to be with Superman at the moment, as Batman points out.)

the joker batman movie

They aren't the only ones to watch out for. The film is also filled with a lot of great cameos from Mariah Carey to Billy Dee Williams, reprising his decades-old role as Harvey Dent/Two-Face from 1989's "Batman." Keep an ear out for Ellie Kemper of Netflix's "Unbreakable Kimmy Schimdt," too.

The biggest surprise — and treat — comes later in the film when a few surprise characters show up. Kids will instantly notice the brilliant tie-in to Lego's popular "LEGO Dimensions" video game, which brings together characters from a plethora of Warner Bros. movies and brands together in one place. The addition of several instantly recognizable characters makes it feel like a simple extension of the game and brand. Seriously, despite some Gremlins briefly popping up in a TV spot, bravo to DC and Warner Bros. for not unveiling and spoiling the twist in the film's many trailers and television ads.

Bigger props to Warner Bros. for not hammering viewers over the head once again with Batman's somber origin story. Every iteration of Batman spends wasted time retelling how Bruce Wayne's parents were killed in front of the child to move the story along.

lego batman parents

Keep your eyes searching on the screen throughout the film. There's so much going on in the backgrounds of some action-packed sequences, that you'll want to go back and see some scenes again or slowed down, especially true for anyone trying to spot tiny nods and Easter eggs.

Not only is this the Batman movie we need, but it's also the Batman and Robin movie fans have wanted. Now that Warner Bros. knows what makes a great Batman movie, hopefully it can start making live-action DC movies great again.

"The LEGO Batman Movie" is in theaters February 10.

the lego batman movie

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for "The LEGO Batman Movie."

The Dark Knight has no problem throwing punches left and right at previous Batman movies and even a subtle dig at Trump in "The LEGO Batman Movie."

So it should be little surprise that even the comic's competition doesn't go unscathed in the film.

When Batman heads home, he has to submit a password to open his Lego Batcave.

The password?

"Iron Man sucks."

lego batman cave

It's sure to get a lot of chuckles in theaters. Not only is it a nice little dig at Marvel, but Iron Man is essentially Batman's counterpart in the Marvel universe.

Both are billionaire playboys who are self-made superheroes without any actual super abilities. One is perhaps a little more egotistical than the other.

tony stark civil war

The password is used a second time later in the movie when Batman has to reenter the cave.

It's the only big Marvel reference I noticed in the animated movie, but there is already a lot to keep your eye out for while watching.

The INSIDER Summary

• Mattel and Warner Bros. are releasing a realistic, remote-controlled Batmobile this fall.
• The Batmobile is modeled after the car that appears in November's "Justice League" film.
• The car can be controlled via remote or an app-enabled tablet or smartphone.
• Fans will be able to drive from Batman's point of view through a camera in the cockpit.
• It will retail for $249.99.

If you've wanted to get behind the wheel of the newest Batmobile, fans will be able to do just that later this year.

Mattel and Warner Bros. Consumer Products are releasing a highly-detailed, remote-controlled Batmobile inspired by this year's upcoming "Justice League" movie.

INSIDER was able to check out a prototype of the vehicle in person Friday ahead of the 2017 international Toy Fair. This is a car collectors are going to want to get their hands on.

The $249.99 Elite-Tek Batmobile is a scaled-down remote-controlled version of the car that will be featured in "Justice League." It can also be controlled through an app on a tablet or smartphone.

Mattel project designer Michael Kadile told INSIDER the car will be able to drive six to seven mph and weighs about four pounds.

The car also has moving missiles on its hood and makes roaring engine sounds. The most impressive feature of the car, though, is the smoke that comes out of the exhaust pipe.

A post shared by Kirsten (@not_kristen) on Feb 21, 2017 at 11:45am PST on

What Batmobile isn't complete without Batman to drive it? The vehicle will also come with a Batman figure whose arm will bend with the steering wheel to make it look like he's actually driving and his foot presses on the gas pedal. The Batman figure that will come with the toy was not available to view at Toy Fair. He'll presumably be wearing an updated Batsuit that Ben Affleck will wear in the new film.

Fans will also be able to go behind the drivers seat with the Dark Knight. A camera in the cockpit of the car will allow fans to drive from the Caped Crusader's point of view with an app-controlled device.

According to Mattel, a jump mode feature will also elevate the Batmobile.

For reference, here's how the Batmobile from "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" looked in person when it was at last year's Toy Fair:

wonder woman

Warner Bros. has been teasing the release of its big superhero movie, "Justice League," and the official trailer for the film is finally here.

With Superman "gone," Bruce Wayne/Batman and Diana Prince/Wonder Woman seek out all of the superheroes that were teased in "Batman v Superman" to stop the onslaught of an attack set to plague all of mankind. We get good looks at Aquaman (Jason Momoa), the Flash (Ezra Miller), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and a peek at Jim Gordon, who will be played by J.K. Simmons.

The most frustrating thing about the trailer is that Warner Bros. doesn't tease the return of Superman. Anyone familiar with the Justice League crew knows he's a part of it.

Here's the movie's official synopsis via Warner Bros.:

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

"Justice League" is set to be released November 17. Check out the trailer below:

12 cool things we noticed in the new 'Justice League' trailer

flash suit

Warner Bros. released its official trailer for "Justice League" Saturday morning, and, while we get some good looks at Aquaman and the Flash, it leaves something to be desired.

We don't learn much about the film that fans couldn't have put together from last year's "Batman v Superman." Batman and Wonder Woman are rounding up a group of superpowered metahumans to help prevent a terrible vision Bruce Wayne saw in the last movie. What we see in the trailer is a mix of Wayne rounding up the heroes and then taking down some of the demons Wayne saw in "BvS."

For fans who may not have been impressed with WB's last two big releases, "Batman v Superman" and "Suicide Squad," it's easy to be hesitant about another mashup of DC heroes to take down a villain who wants to destroy the Earth. Still, I'm holding out hope for "Justice League" now that DC's Geoff Johns is co-running the company's cinematic universe. Johns has been one of the minds behind DC's successful Arrowverse on TV ("The Flash,""Supergirl," etc.).

"Justice League" is in theaters November 17. Keep reading to see some of the cool moments you may have overlooked in the new trailer.

SEE ALSO: The 18 worst new TV shows of the year so far, according to critics

The villains we see in the trailer are some of Darkseid's minions, Parademons.

Remember that somewhat confusing vision Bruce Wayne had in "Batman v Superman"? It hinted at an even bigger villain to come in the future. It looks like Batman and his team of villains will take on a bunch of Parademons in the film this fall. There are several scenes where we see Wonder Woman, Batman, and Aquaman taking them on.

We get a peek at Aquaman's wife, Mera.

Amber Heard will play Mera, the Queen of Atlantis. It's not clear how much of a role she'll play in the film.

Amy Adams will be back as Lois Lane.

We get confirmation that Lane will be back in some way in "Justice League." At the end of "Batman v Superman," we learned Clark Kent (Superman) was planning to propose to her soon.

We expect him to pop up somewhere in the film even though he received a funeral at the end of "BvS." You can't have the Justice League without one of the group's main players.

the force awakens disney

There are a lot of sequels coming in 2017, and many have already hit theaters. But to the chagrin of Hollywood executives, many are bombing at the box office.

Analysts are crying sequel fatigue, but studios trying to bank on franchises isn't new. They're just doing it a lot more frequently, but with titles people care way less about seeing.

In looking at Box Office Mojo's ranking of some of the highest-grossing franchises adjusted for inflation, it's clear that pursuing sequels has always been a roller-coaster ride.

Business Insider selected some of the most well-known franchises and compared their box-office gross numbers.

Of those selected, only "The Lord of the Rings" and "Captain America" have seen revenue growth with every installment. "Deadpool" is the highest-grossing movie related to the X-Men universe, and not even the wide praise for 2017's "Logan" could change that.

Every other franchise lacks a pattern, except that it seems that "Fast and Furious" reached a positive turning point in 2009. (Note: "Fate of the Furious" is still new to theaters, so it has time to earn a lot more.) And people really, really like "Star Wars" movies. Although "A New Hope" still remains the most successful at the box office by a pretty big number.

Adam West — an actor defined and also constrained by his role in the 1960s series “Batman” — died Friday night in Los Angeles. He was 88. A rep said that he died after a short battle with leukemia.

“Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight, and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero,” his family said in a statement.

West became known to a new generation of TV fans through his recurring voice role as Mayor Adam West on Fox’s “Family Guy.” West was a regular on the show from 2000 through its most recent season. West in recent years did a range of voice-over work, on such shows as Adult Swim’s “Robot Chicken” and Disney Channel’s “Jake and the Neverland Pirates.”

But it was his role as the Caped Crusader in the 1966-68 ABC series “Batman” that defined West’s career.

With its “Wham! Pow!” onscreen exclamations, flamboyant villains and cheeky tone, “Batman” became a surprise hit with its premiere on ABC in 1966, a virtual symbol of ’60s kitsch. The half-hour action comedy was such a hit that it aired twice a week on ABC at its peak. But within two seasons, the show’s popularity slumped as quickly as it soared.

West’s portrayal of the superhero and his alter ego, Bruce Wayne, ultimately made it hard for him to get other roles, and while he continued to work throughout his career, options remained limited because of his association with the character.

West also chafed against the darker versions of Bob Kane’s hero that emerged in more recent years, beginning with the Michael Keaton-starring, Tim Burton-directed adaptations that began in 1989, and followed by Christopher Nolan’s enormously successful Dark Knight trilogy.

In February 2016, CBS sitcom “The Big Bang Theory,” which had hosted a number of geek favorites over the years, celebrated its 200th episode — and marked the 50th anniversary of “Batman” — with an appearance by West.

Asked by Variety what the character of Batman has come to mean to him over five decades, West said: “Money. Some years ago I made an agreement with Batman. There was a time when Batman really kept me from getting some pretty good roles, and I was asked to do what I figured were important features. However, Batman was there, and very few people would take a chance on me walking on to the screen. And they’d be taking people away from the story. So I decided that since so many people love Batman, I might as well love it too. Why not? So I began to reengage myself with Batman. And I saw the comedy. I saw the love people had for it, and I just embraced it.”

West made his feature debut in 1959’s “The Young Philadelphians,” starring Paul Newman.

Various supporting roles in movies and TV followed – including a part in the Three Stooges movie “The Outlaws Is Coming.”

The origins of the “Batman” series are actually quite complex, but the project eventually landed at 20th Century Fox, which handed it to producer William Dozier, who devised the show’s camp comedy sensibility.

Both West and Lyle Waggoner were considered for the part of Batman before West was cast, playing alongside Burt Ward as his sidekick Robin.

In a PBS special that touched on the show, Ward noted that West’s slow, portentous delivery was occasionally designed to eat up screen time, thus cutting into his co-star’s dialogue.

With actors like Cesar Romero (Joker) and Burgess Meredith (Penguin) comprising Batman’s rogue’s gallery of villains, the show became an almost instant success, urging viewers to tune in for the next episode at the “Same Bat-time.” The series spawned a movie — pitting the Dynamic Duo against a team-up of villains — before being canceled after three seasons due, primarily, to its high production costs.

The show came to be viewed with some contempt in comicbook circles, especially after the darker vision of Batman became dominant in the ’70s and ’80s.

West found serious film work scarce following the series, though he remained in demand for personal appearances as the character and voice work, including a recurring stint on “Family Guy” and animated versions of Batman. Other roles ranged from “The Happy Hooker” and “Hooper” to the Michael Tolkin-directed movies “The Rapture” and “The New Age.”

West wrote two books, one, titled “Back to the Batcave” and published in the mid-1990s, in which he said that he was “angry and disappointed” not to have been offered the chance to reprise the role in the Burton movies, despite being 60 at the time. The attendant publicity seemed to put West back on the cultural radar, at least as a source of nostalgia.

Born William West Anderson in 1928 in Walla Walla, Wash., the actor later adopted his stage name, and began his career in earnest when he moved to Hawaii in the 1950s to star in a local children’s program.

He is survived by his wife Marcelle, six children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Affleck said there may have been some confusion since he no longer is directing in the solo Batman film in which he is also starring, but he reassured over 6,000 fans in Hall H that he's not leaving from Bat mantle anytime soon — or at least if he has any say in it.

"I know there's this misconception because I didn't direct it [The Batman] and maybe I wasn't enthusiastic about it, it's f---ing amazing and I still can't believe it after two films, I have this great history with this studio, and [WB CEO] Kevin Tsujihara and [WB's president of worldwide marketing and distribution] Sue Kroll and [WB pictures president and CCO] Toby Emmerich have said to me, 'We want you to be our Batman,' and, you know, I believe them," he said.

The 20 worst-reviewed superhero movies ever made

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Superhero movies are having tons of success lately — but not all of them are winners.
  • Some movies like "Batman & Robin" and "Catwoman" weren't huge successes with critics.
  • The 1984 film "Supergirl" tops the list with a score of 7% on Rotten Tomatoes.

While the Rotten Tomatoes tool for aggregating critical reviews doesn’t always fairly assess with technical precision just how good or bad a film is – since that is ultimately a subjective conclusion – its scores certainly give us a general sense of when a movie is a must-see or just not that great. Also, the Tomatometer is a pretty useful tool for comparing two or more films, which is always fun and worth discussing.

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the DC Extended Universe, and other superhero-related franchises have been enjoying great success with their properties in the past few years, it is definitely not true that every superhero movie out there is worth making for the sake of profits or to serve an overall continuity. There are certainly superhero films that are just plain bad and should’ve never been released without going through some quite significant changes.

Some of these films are old, and others are very recent. Some of these heroes are from Marvel, some are from DC, and others are independent. Budgets fluctuate, reasons differ, and contexts vary… But all of these projects have one thing in common: they are not good.

These are the 20 Worst Superhero Movies Ever (According To Rotten Tomatoes).

20. "Green Lantern"— 26%

2011’s "Green Lantern" was not good, and that is a notion that even the most voracious DC Comics fans can agree on. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a score of 26%.

Starring Ryan Reynolds (who had already played a different hero – Deadpool– in 2009’s "X-Men Origins: Wolverine"), Blake Lively (fresh off her "Gossip Girl" success), and Taika Waititi (who would later direct "Thor: Ragnarok"), "Green Lantern" was an attempt from Warner Bros and DC Comics to keep on capitalizing on superheroes in the heels of the incredibly successful "The Dark Knight" trilogy. But like "Watchmen," which also came out during those years, it didn’t work quite as well as Christopher Nolan’s take on Batman.

While "Green Lantern" was perceived by many as a career-killer, Ryan Reynolds certainly redeemed himself when he returned to his "X-Men Origins" character in 2016’s solo "Deadpool" movie.

19. "Ghost Rider"— 26%

Even though it has a score of 26% on Rotten Tomatoes, "Ghost Rider" made some decent money in 2007, grossing at least two times its budget and being considered a box office success.

Written and directed by Mark Steven Johnson, who wrote "Jack Frost," wrote and directed 2003’s "Daredevil," and produced "Elektra,""Ghost Rider" was not received well by most film reviewers and was even criticized by religious groups who claimed that it had satanic references.

The movie featured actor Nicolas Cage (who, also in 2007, starred in the very successful "National Treasure: Book of Secrets") and Eva Mendes (fresh off her breakout performance in 2005’s "Hitch").

Curiously, Nic Cage has a Ghost Rider tattoo, which had to be covered during the movie’s shoot.

18. "Suicide Squad"— 25%

"Suicide Squad" is the fourth installment in the DCEU continuity, and just like "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" — which also came out in 2016 — it was liked by some fans but not well-received by most critics.

There was a lot riding in the hands of "Suicide Squad." For one, the movie featured Jared Leto’s Joker, which was the first time this character appeared in a live-action movie since Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning take in "The Dark Knight." Secondly, "Squad" had to introduce seven villains that set out to save the world — Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Rick Flag, Captain Boomerang, El Diablo, Killer Croc, and Katana — and one villain who was the actual antagonist of the story (The Enchantress). Last but not least, there were several production missteps reportedly attached to the project, such as rumors that the final cut of the movie was conducted by a marketing team.

On Rotten Tomatoes, "Suicide Squad" has a score of 25%.
